Durham University Volunteering and Outreach exists to support wider community needs and volunteer development – providing impactful, ethical and safe volunteering opportunities for all. That purpose has guided us since 1989 and shapes everything we do.

Our work is underpinned by five priorities:

  • Cultivate an understanding of the value of volunteering – helping everyone recognise what it genuinely offers, to communities and to themselves.
  • Break down barriers to participation – making volunteering accessible to every student and member of staff at Durham.
  • Understand our impact and community need – listening to the people we serve and letting that shape our offer.
  • Raise the profile of volunteering – championing it across the university and beyond.
  • Support volunteer development – giving volunteers the tools to reflect on how their experience shapes their growth and wellbeing.

At Durham, volunteering touches every corner of university life – through DUSVO’s 25 student-led projects, college outreach, degree programmes, sports teams and staff volunteering. Together, we work with over 200 charities, organisations and schools, united by a shared commitment to making a difference.
